Unpaid Internships

The Illinois Department of Corrections welcomes individuals who wish to participate in unpaid internships and has a variety to choose from for undergraduate and graduate level students. IDOC works with both instructors and professors to ensure that student interests as well as the university/college requirements are met.

To begin the process, interested students should review the list of available opportunities using the Internship Guidebook hyperlink below. After identifying a facility of interest, students should contact that facility’s internship coordinator and provide a letter from their university academic advisor outlining the internship requirements. The internship coordinator will review the information with the facility’s Warden to determine whether an internship opportunity is available. If an opportunity is available, the internship coordinator will contact the student to schedule an interview and facility tour.

Following the interview and tour, the student should confirm whether they wish to proceed with the internship. If so, the student must complete the background check application documents and submit them to the internship coordinator for processing. Once the background check has been completed, the internship coordinator will notify the prospective intern of any remaining steps needed to finalize the process. Prospective interns can access the background check application documents by clicking the hyperlinks below.

If the Warden approves the request, the below required documents will be completed to proceed.
